Installation Notes

Professional engine builder or mechanic installation is strongly recommended:

1. Ensure engine is cool – Allow the engine to cool completely before disassembly.

2. Disconnect battery – Always disconnect the negative terminal before working.

3. Drain engine oil – Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.

4. Remove timing gear cover – Remove the timing gear cover to access the idle gear and shaft.

5. Remove the idle gear – Remove the retaining clip, washer, or bolt securing the idle gear to the shaft; withdraw the idle gear.

6. Remove the old idle gear shaft – Using a proper puller or press, carefully remove the old shaft from the engine block; note the orientation and any shims or spacers.

7. Clean and inspect – Clean the shaft bore, idle gear bushing, and related components; inspect for wear, scoring, or damage; replace if necessary.

8. Install the new idle gear shaft – Press or drive the new shaft into the engine block using a proper driver; ensure it is fully seated and properly aligned.

9. Install the idle gear – Install the idle gear over the shaft with the correct orientation; install the retaining clip, washer, or bolt.

10. Check gear backlash – Verify proper backlash between the idle gear and its mating gears (crankshaft, camshaft, or injection pump gear) using a dial indicator or feeler gauge.

11. Reinstall timing gear cover – Install a new gasket and reinstall the timing gear cover; torque bolts to specification.

12. Refill with engine oil – Fill with the correct grade and quantity of engine oil.

13. Start and test – Start the engine; listen for abnormal timing gear noise and verify proper engine operation.

14. Road test / Operational test – Test the vehicle or equipment to verify proper engine performance and no abnormal noise or vibration.
