Installation Notes

Professional engine builder installation required:

1. Disconnect battery — Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning work.

2. Drain engine oil/coolant — Drain fluids as necessary for access to timing cover.

3. Remove timing cover — Remove the front timing gear cover and gasket.

4. Align timing marks — Rotate the engine to top dead center (TDC) and record timing mark positions.

5. Remove the old idler gear — Unbolt the idler gear shaft/retainer and carefully remove the gear.

6. Inspect idler shaft and bushings — Check the idler shaft and bushings/bearings for wear or damage; replace as needed.

7. Inspect mating gears — Check crankshaft and camshaft gear teeth for wear; replace if damaged.

8. Clean thoroughly — Clean the timing cavity and all gear mounting surfaces.

9. Prepare the new idler gear — Inspect the new gear and apply assembly lube to the shaft and bushings.

10. Install the new idler gear — Position the gear on the idler shaft with timing marks correctly aligned.

11. Secure the gear — Install and torque the retaining bolt/shaft to manufacturer specifications.

12. Verify timing alignment — Reconfirm all timing marks are correctly aligned per the service manual.

13. Install timing cover — Install new gasket and reinstall the timing cover.
